How Secure Is Security Window Film?

The summer is here!  That is phenomenal news for those who love the sun, who love the pool, who love swimming, who love the cookouts, who love being free from winter coats and sweaters, and who love the proverbial long walks on the beach.

All that being said, summer can sometimes pack a wallop, when it comes to extreme heat and extreme storms.  As we all know, more and more the weather is becoming less and less predictable.  Last year, the Atlantic and Gulf coasts in the United States sustained a lot of damage from summer storms and hurricanes.  This year, weather professionals are predicting up to 14 storms this coming hurricane season, four of which could be major hurricanes.

So, even though we are a little less prone to hurricanes here in Calgary, severe weather, thunder storms, and high winds make the windows in your home vulnerable.

    Taking Precautions for Storm Safety

When storms are extreme, protecting your home and your family are on the top of your mind.  The first step in taking the necessary precautions for safety must include a focus on securing your windows as best as you can.

Back in the day, people would shutter or even board up their windows with an impending storm.  That is less of an option these days.  However, there is a way to secure your windows with storm security film.  Of course, storm security film cannot replace storm shutters, but it provides an added layer of protection for your house when summer storms come rolling in.

    What Is Storm Security Film?

Storm security film is a kind of window film that can be applied to your home or your office windows.  If installed properly – and we highly recommend getting a protective window film professional to install security window film – then the film will not obstruct the beautiful view of your backyard from your home, or the view of the skyline from your office.

Essentially, the security window tint is a layer over your window that will ensure that your windows are stronger and are less susceptible to shattering in a storm.

In addition, even if a tree, or some other type of debris, hits a window in your home (or office) then the broken window will be held together by the window film.  Therefore, you still have protection against the elements and no one can be harmed from broken glass scattered inside your house.

What are the Main Benefits of Storm Security Film?

There are really three main benefits of storm security film (or security window film).  They are as follows:

    • Greatly improved durability of your windows to prevent breakage;
    • Helpful prevention of windows shattering when sustaining an impact; and
    • Increased protection from debris and water coming in after something breaks a window.

At times of a severe storm when you are in your home, you would be wise to make sure that your family moves to a room without windows.  That way, you can ensure your safety while you allow your windows protected with storm security film to make your window’s glass stronger, and less able to shatter.

Are Windows Covered with Storm Security Film Covered Hurricane Proof?

Unfortunately, windows installed with storm security film are not hurricane proof.  Nor are they earthquake proof, burglar proof, bomb proof, or bulletproof.  They are, however, designed to make sure that your windows are more durable, will better protect against impacts, and are more shatter resistant.

In looking at the various threats from Mother Nature, you can see that security window film is a good choice.  When you are faced with severe hurricane winds, storm security film can reduce the risk of harm from pieces of broken glass if your window happens to shatter.  In the event of an earthquake, storm security window film may be able to keep a window together if it comes out of the frame.

Interestingly, security window film was originally created to improve safety and security in the face of the threat of terrorist bombings.  Yet, now they are instrumental in protecting you in a storm, during some other natural event, or even from “smash and take” kind of crimes.  That is because the film will hold window glass together even if broken.

In that vein, with security window film, a would-be burglary must think about the circumstances – should he take the time to keep on trying to break a window through the durable window film, or should he cut his losses and move on.  Any burglar would be smart to move on because time is short in any crime.  That is true particularly if a security alarm goes off.  The end result, your home and your belongings are safe.

Can Window Film Really Protect Patients in a Hospital?

It is not a surprise to state that we live in a world where appearances matter.  From the clothes we wear, the hairstyles we choose, and the profiles we create on social media, to the cars we drive, we all now seem to strive to put our best appearance forward.

In fact, when it comes to auto window tinting, for many years the only thing that the industry focused on was the principle that “looks matter . . . a lot.”  So, just like all of the other trends in fashion, style, and entertainment, the window film industry (including Tint Tech, which is the best window tint shop in Calgary), zeroed in on uses of window tinting film to enhance the look of our cars.  The window tinting products of days gone by were made to ensure that your car, your hot rod, your SUV looked the coolest, the most elegant, or the most expensive.

    Do Looks Really Matter Anymore?

There is no question that auto window tinting has a look that is important.  However, window film has taken on so many other practical uses that maybe, just maybe, looks don’t matter as much as they once did.  Put another way, looks, style, or aesthetics are no longer the only thing that matters when it comes to window film.

As we discussed in last week’s blog, auto window tint can help protect your and your family from the damaging, seriously harmful effects of the sun.  Given that skin cancer is one of the leading cancers today, auto window tint film is used to keep our skin away from harmful UV rays.  So, many customers in the auto window tint market are not so laser focused on looks as they used to be.  Rather, there is a health component to security window tint that we did not realize until recently.

In addition, we also now know that window film can be great for the environment.  In your car, window film keeps out the heat during the summer, so you save a little gas when your air conditioner does not have to work as hard.  In your home, window film can keep heat out on a summer day, or keep heat in on a cold winter day, again having the delightful result of saving on energy bills.  Finally, in your workplace, a large commercial building can save a significant amount of money on heating or cooling the building by just having window film on the office building’s windows.

Finally, as you may see from many of our previous blogs, window film on the windows in your home or car can even have a deterrent effect on would-be burglars, thereby adding a measure of security to your belongings.

Can Window Film Improve Health and Safety at a Hospital?

Given all of the non-aesthetic benefits to window film discussed above, it is not a stretch to learn that window film can even help a hospital improve the services it provides to patients.

A Case Study – The Cleveland Clinic

Not long ago, the Director of Nursing at the Florida location of the renowned Cleveland Clinic was searching for ideas on how to improve cleanliness and reduce infection in the hospital.  The Director was concerned about recent studies that revealed that the privacy curtains in hospitals could easily and quickly become contaminated with bacteria.  That did not come as much of a surprise because any time a hospital staff member touched a curtain to enter or exit a room, there is was risk of transferring any infection-causing bacteria to their patients.

The Clinic formed a task force to address the problem.  Some of the ideas that came from the brainstorming session included:

    • Using disposable curtains, rather than using ones that needed to be cleaned
    • Using partition screens;
    • Installing frosted glass doors; or
    • Installing blinds.

However, none of the ideas proved satisfactory.  It was simply not practical to use disposable curtains.  Screens that would have to be cleaned was also an impractical solution as too costly and time consuming.  Blinds would be more expensive than privacy curtains, and they would still need to be periodically disinfected.

Finally, frosted glass would have been a marvelous solution to the problem, however, they were way too expensive for the hospital’s budget.

    Window Film to the Rescue

The hospital then discovered window film.  Just like so many other window film customers do, the hospital realized that they could get the same result with window film as they would with their #1 frosted-glass solution.  The huge benefit was that window film was far less expensive than frosted glass.  Indeed, window film on the existing hospital room windows would serve the same purpose as frosted glass at a fraction of the cost.

The hospital went on to remove all of the privacy curtains, and install window film on the glass doors.  The result:  a savings of tens of thousands of dollars each year in manpower and laundering costs.

In sum, the frosted-glass effect of the window film gave the patients the privacy they needed, gave the hospital a huge cost savings, saved the nurses and staff from having to disinfect any more curtains, and took away from both the patients and the hospital the fear of infection that came with the privacy curtains.

In fact, the Cleveland Clinic was so pleased with the results that it has plans to install window film in many more hospitals in the future.

The moral of this story is that we have all come a long way from window film being just for looks.  Window film is now a major player in giving hospital patients privacy and protecting against infection, which is a perennial problem at hospitals in Canada as well as the U.S.

Does Auto Window Tint Protect You from Skin Damage?

Did you know that in the United States more patients are diagnosed with skin cancer every year than all other cancers combined?  As finish out May, which is National Skin Cancer/Melanoma Awareness Month, we thought it would be a good time to talk about how you can protect yourself from skin cancer.

    Some Important Stats . . .

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five people in the United States will develop skin cancer before they reach the age of 70.  Men are twice as likely to get skin cancer as women.   Notably, even though African-Americans, Latin-Americans, and Asian-Americans are less susceptible, skin cancer is still a serious risk to those groups.

Treating skin cancer in the U.S. costs about $8.1 billion annually.  That includes about $3.3 billion for melanoma skin cancers and $4.8 billion for non-melanoma cancers.  Also, between 1994 and 2004, diagnoses of non-melanoma skin cancers has increased by 77%.

The primary cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.  In fact, more than 90% of skin cancer cases are caused by UV exposure.

    How Can You Protect Yourself?

The best way to protect yourself, says the Skin Cancer Foundation, is to use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, and staying in the shade when possible.  Yet, when it comes to skin protection, we often do not think about protecting our skin when driving in our cars.

We often forget that regular window glass does not block UV rays from coming through.  So, if you are driving for long periods, even with the window closed, you are exposed to UV rays that could be harmful.  AAA notes that Americans are largely exposed to the sun because they are traveling in their cars.  Americans spend, on average, 290 hours on the road every year.  Regular glass, and even the majority of factory glass in cars, does not typically protect against UV rays.  Also, it would be impractical to put on sunscreen every time you went for a drive.

So, auto window tinting is a phenomenal way to protect yourself from UV rays.  Indeed, window tinting and skin cancer prevention are more and more connected because window tinting is so effective in blocking UV rays.

The Two Types of UV Rays – UVA and UVB

To begin, there are two types of UV rays:  UVA and UVB.  About 90% of skin cancer cases are caused by UVA rays.  UVB rays are more rare, but very dangerous.

UVA rays typically penetrate deep into your skin and accelerate the aging process.  That means that, over time, UVA rays will result in wrinkles, age lines, and eventually skin cancer.  The damage that comes from UVA rays are not immediately noticeable but accumulate over time.

UVB rays are so harmful that they will cause immediate effects like burns or blisters.  But unlike UVA rays that have a cumulative effect, your skin can heal after being burned from UVB rays.

Blocking UV Rays in Your Car

When it comes to dangerous UVB rays, window glass normally blocks those rays.  Also, vehicle manufacturers typically treat windshields to block UVA rays.  However, the rest of the windows in your vehicle are not at all effective in blocking UVA rays.

That is when auto window tint film comes into play. Experts agree that auto window tinting is an effective way to protect yourself from skin cancer.  A quality, high-performance window tint will block up to 99% of UV rays, and therefore protect you each and every time you take a drive.

Of course, you do not need to have dark window tint to protect yourself.  The technology is such that now there is a great selection of clear window tints to choose from.  Thus, for a complete solution to skin cancer prevention when spending all of those hours in the car is auto window tint.

Now, you might think that we at Tint Tech are advocating that you get auto window tint because we are one of Calgary’s premier auto window tint shops.  However, you do not need to take our work for it.

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s first recommendation for skin cancer prevention in your vehicle is – yes, you guessed it – auto window tint.  So, you do not need to take it from us, but take the advice of the Skin Cancer Foundation.  Auto window tint is very effective in protecting you and your family from skin cancer.

Darkened windows can be an appealing look.  As noted, however, clear window tint is available if you prefer to keep your car’s look as is, rather than having your windows darkened.  Of course, for those of you who love to have a sleek, darkened window look for your ride, then getting auto window tint is a win-win.  You get great looks coupled with very practical safety for your skin by installing auto window tint.

Keeping Things Cool While Still Letting “The Sun Shine In”

Do you have a room with a lot of windows and a lot of natural light?  Better yet, did you install a sunroom in your home because you enjoy natural light so much?  If so, you understand the power and comfort that comes from tons of natural light beaming into your home.  No artificial light can compare to the beauty of a room filled with natural light.  It can invigorate you, make you feel a little less cooped up inside your house, and even save on electric bills because you do not need to turn your indoor lights on.  You may even be the type to want to sing, from time to time, the familiar refrain from the song “Let the Sun Shine In.”

All that being said, there can be some drawbacks to a sun room, or even a sun-filled room.  The sun is hot!  It brings a lot of heat into your home, which can be great during the winter months, but is not so good when your air conditioning system is working overtime in the summer to combat the heat that is pouring into your home.

There are, however, some great and easy ways to enjoy that sun-filled room while still keeping your electric bills in check.  This blog will countdown the top 5 ways you can find that balance.

Of course, if you want to learn more from a specialist, then we invite you to call us at Tint Tech, Calgary’s premier residential window film and window tinting business.  We can provide you with a number of cost-saving options to handle the sun’s heat, whether it is for residential window film or for window tint for your car.  Call us today at 1-403-968-8468, or be sure to fill out our online contact form.

Now, here is a countdown of the top 5 ways to tackle the heat in those rooms that let in a lot of sun.

Tip #5 – Put up Blinds or Curtains

Now, at first blush, you might think that installing blinds and/or curtains would defeat the entire purpose of having natural light in a room – particularly a sun room.  But, think again.  Blinds and curtains actually give you control over when you want to enjoy the natural light.  Most times, you will likely not be at home to enjoy the natural light, and you do not want that air conditioner running just to cool an empty sun room.

Blinds and curtains to the rescue!  When you are not in a room, pull the blinds or curtains and keep that room cool.  Conversely, when you want to enjoy the sun room for the sun, open those blinds and curtains and enjoy.  Blinds and curtains even give you the control to bring some needed shade when the sun is at its peak.

Tip #4 – Plant Some Trees

By placing plants and trees just outside your window, you can employ a natural way to provide a little shade in a room without taking away all of the room’s natural light.  By cutting down on the natural light, and having some areas of shade, you therefore can cut down on the heat coming into the room.  Yet, you have not completely taken away the reason for a sun room in the first place – enjoying the natural light.  Rather, the trees can just give a way to block a little of the direct sunlight.

Tip #3 – Replace your Windows

Old or poorly insulated windows are the main culprit when it comes to letting cool air escape a home or be beaten by the sun’s rays.  The technology of windows today is, by and far, better than it was in days past.  With double or triple pane windows, you can really improve the insulation in your home.  Of course, windows will always be the weakest point of any home when it comes to losing warm or cold air to the elements, but buying new windows can make a big difference in your heating and air conditioning bills.

Tip #2 – Use Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans have been around for centuries, yet they still work like a charm.  As you would expect, ceiling fans continuously circulate air and will create a gentle breeze that can make 78 degrees feel like 75 degrees.  When a ceiling fan runs counterclockwise, it pushes the cool air down to the floor.  That cool air then makes you feel cooler than what the air conditioning dial might say.

So, another way to keep a sun-filled room cooler is to do it the old-fashioned way – use a ceiling fan.

With the latest technology in residential window film, you can enjoy your sun room without curtains, blinds, trees, or new windows.  In fact, residential window film has the best of both worlds.  You can enjoy a full window that lets in all of the natural light, but affirmatively blocks out all of the UV and infrared rays of the sun that bring the heat into your home.  Regular glass does not stop the sun’s heat from getting through.  A clear window film, however, will.  It will stop the sun’s heat right in its tracks, while still letting the light in.

It may sound too good to be true, but you will change your mind once you have experienced it for yourself.  Therefore, take a moment to consider whether you want to spend money on costly windows or window treatments that will take away natural light; or whether you want to enjoy every bit of natural light while still keeping your room cool.  Residential window films – that range from clear to dark tint – are definitely worth a look.
