    Paint Protection Film

Ah, the Many Benefits of Paint Protection Film for Your Car

You may have heard of “clear bra” or “auto wrap,” but it is all synonymous with a marvelous product that allows you to protect your car from debris, scratches, small abrasions, or anything else that might keep your beloved ride from looking less than new – paint protection film.

As car lovers, we all understand that there is nothing better than keeping your car looking like new.  That new car finish, that gleam from the clear coat paint, is something that you just want to last forever.

Yet, we need to drive, and stuff happens. There are gravel and rocks on the road, there are people who park next to you at the shopping mall. There are myriad ways in which someone or something might damage the surface of your car. That’s where you need to seriously consider paint protection film. It is the product that gives your car the best chance of looking new, longer.

Does Paint Protection Film Only Go on the Front of Your Car?

The so-called “clear bra” is not only for the front of your car. You can have your whole car protected from road debris and other environmental hazards by having an auto wrap applied to your vehicle.

The wrap is an invisible layer of plastic that is overlaid over your car’s clear coat. It provides an extra barrier of protection between your paint’s finish and rock chips, bug splatter, bird droppings and more.

Every time we take our cars out, there is an opportunity for damage. If scratches are deep enough they can expose the metal underneath the paint, leading to problems with moisture, peeling, and rust.

But paint protection film is it is not a magic shield. There are rocks that can tear through the film, and not all applications are of equal quality.

    Composition of Film

One of the biggest advantages to having a paint protection film, or clear bra, applied to your car is that it is self-healing to a certain extent. This is due to the layer of urethane within the film itself.

Most films have multiple layers to them: The top clear coat, a urethane or polyurethane core, and an acrylic adhesive. When road debris impacts the film, if it is small enough it does not create a tear in the film. Instead, it makes an indent in the surface, pushing the clear coat down onto the urethane core.

Because the urethane layer is extremely flexible, it can give way enough that the clear coat layer is not punctured, and as it expands back into place, it eliminates all trace that there was an impact in the first place.

    Protection for Your Vehicle

As described earlier, it is not a magical solution and there are some things that it will not be able to protect against or prevent. However, when dealing with small pieces of sand, gravel, rock and other roadway surface material kicked up my other cars, it is likely the film can handle it.

The same debris hitting a car without a clear wrap on it would damage the clear coat. Even if those scratches are not immediately visible to the naked eye, over time they accumulate and the clear coat becomes hazy and dull.

Obviously, the most damage to your car will be on the front end, as you drive through what the cars in front of you kick up, but the rest of your car is vulnerable to other dangers.

As people squeeze past the vehicles in a crowded parking lot, jewelry, watches, keys and other accessories can scratch your car as easily as rock chips on the freeway.

Bird droppings and bug splatter likewise damage your car’s finish. They can damage a clear wrap too, but will do so much more slowly, and the clear film is designed in such a way that the surface does not allow these contaminants to bond and are therefore more easily washed away.

This is not an excuse to not wash your car. Droppings and bug splatter will not be repelled from your car and they will still be unsightly, but the film will keep them from causing damage to your paint.

Does it Still Yellow with Age?

Yellowing used to be a problem with clear film, especially on white cars, but this is no longer the case. When customers began to complain about the yellowing, the manufacturers of the film looked into the cause and found that exposure to UV from the sun was causing the adhesives to degrade over time and therefore cause the color change. All new films are installed with acrylic adhesive that resists this kind of breakdown.

    What About Bubbling or Blistering?

This kind of defect is almost always accounted for by the skill and attention to detail in the installation process. Contaminants trapped under the film will prevent it from adhering cleanly to the body of your car and will cause an air bubble, just like a speck of dust caught under the screen protector of a smartphone. The car should be washed, and the paint should be conditioned with a clay bar or other polishing tool to ensure a uniform surface and the best possible substrate for the film to attach to.

In some, much rarer cases, the film can also peel away from the edges of doors, handles, and around badges and decals. Take care when washing your vehicle not to use abrasive cleaners, and never shoot water directly at an area where the edge of a film would be.

    Window tinting in Calgary

We are Here to Tell You How to Get the Best Window Tinting in Calgary

Tint Tech is one of Calgary’s top window tinting shops.  So, you might think that we’re going to take this opportunity, when talking about “how to get the best window tinting in Calgary,” to gloat about the best qualities and amazing service at Tint Tech.

Well, we’re not going to do that . . . well, not just yet anyway.

No, this blog will be devoted to helping you – as objectively as possible – think about the important factors to consider when shopping for window tinting products in Calgary, and in the surrounding region.  Of course, we know that once you are familiar with the key considerations on finding the best window tinting film in Calgary, you will naturally see that Tint Tech is the way to go for all of your window tinting needs.

But before we get there, let’s get down into the nitty-gritty of what to watch for when window-tint shopping.  There’s a lot to think about.

    1. Where There’s a Warranty, There’s a Way

Almost every top-quality window tint film comes with a limited lifetime warranty.  That said, you should make sure to find out the exact warranty length, and find out whether there are any requirements that come along with the film.

For example, certain types of auto window film require that it be professionally installed in order to take advantage of the warranty.  Indeed, installing it yourself could automatically void the warranty. As another example, a perfectly good warranty will be considered null if the tint you install is too dark under the prevailing law.

In sum, warranties are great.  But, be careful of the requirements surrounding them, so you don’t mistakenly do something that takes away your chance to enjoy the warranty you thought you had.

    2. Enjoy the Install

The installation of automotive window tinting can be very specific.  In fact, our specialists at Tint Tech receive a good deal of training to make sure that the installation of tint is done once, and done right.

Depending on the size of the project (number of windows, type of tint product), it could take between one hour and a several hours to complete the installation.

Don’t be surprised, however, if a professional installer wants to keep your car for a half a day, or longer, to make sure that the job is finished and the window film has completely dried.

    3. The Tint of a Lifetime

One of the primary things you need to watch out for when finding the best window tinting in Calgary is how long the window film will last.  Remember though, the life of your car will vary based upon the age of your car. If your vehicle has ‘been around the block a few times,’ then a “lifetime” for your vehicle could be considerably shorter than if you had a new vehicle.

That difference in longevity could help you save a little money when deciding on a tint product.

By the same token, you also may want to think about the amount you drive, and the conditions in which you typically drive.  Driving in a region that gets a lot of sunlight means that you need a particularly strong auto tint film to avoid aging, fading, and discoloration.  If, however, you keep your prized pocket rocket in the garage, and take it out only infrequently, then that will dictate the type of quality you will need.

In the aggregate, you can expect that most auto window film will last about 10 years.  That could be enough for most vehicles.

    4. Some Products That Tint Tech Has Considered for Customers

As you go through the tint shopping process, do not be afraid to give us a call at Tint Tech.  Our installation professionals have a lot of knowledge, and they love to share it with customers.  Take advantage of our expertise.

    Commercial Window Tint

Do You Have Commercial Window Tint Envy?

Do you have tinting envy?  You know . . . the feeling deep in your stomach that you get when you know that your office or storefront should have window tinting like the other guys on the block?  Well, maybe it’s high time that you make the investment. Remember, it is not just for looks. Rather, window tint for your office or storefront is truly an investment in your property, in your business, and in the building’s future.

Indeed, window tinting is so much more than just the ‘blacked out’ windows, the kind you probably associate with limousines and luxury cars. There are a wide variety of tinting films and materials available for use in commercial settings.

If you want to learn more, then read on.  In this blog we give you a breakdown of some of the benefits you can experience by installing window tint.  We also evaluate what your priorities are, or should be, when putting tinting on your windows.

1.Increased Security for Your Commercial Building

There is, of course, no guarantee that the presence of window tinting film on your windows alone will deter burglaries and break-ins.  But, commercial window tint film will definitely slow down any potential intruders.

If the glass breaks, it is less likely to shatter because the film is bonded to the window with adhesive.  Instead of shards flying everywhere and posing a risk of injuring occupants or damaging merchandise, the pieces will stay stuck to the tinting film.

Also, the window, bonded with the commercial window tint film, will minimize the chance of a nice wide opening for someone looking to break in.  Instead, would-be burglars will have to climb around parts of the window that are still intact and push through a film covered in pieces of broken glass.  Most people looking for an easy target will give up on you and move on to something less troublesome. 2.Keep Things Private

Windows allow a view of the outside world, and allow you to display items that will draw people into your shop.  But at night when you’re cleaning up alone, those same windows give a fishbowl feeling as the light inside makes you and everything around you visible to the outside.

A tinted film will help give you the peace of mind that you aren’t being watched, and that the contents of your space are safe.

3.Commercial Window Tinting for Comfort, Really

Which way does your commercial building face?  Do you have eastern windows that greet every sunrise (and morning shift) with a searing beam from the eye of the sun?  Or does a western exposure heat up the seats in front of the windows until no one wants to sit there?

The orientation of your location is beyond your control, but you don’t need to make your employees or your customers deal with glare or heat.  More efficient than shades that you have to manually raise and lower, commercial window tinting film will help keep the sun from disturbing you and your business.

    4.It Can Protect Your Health

Did you know that glass doesn’t block the harmful rays of the sun?  That’s right, you aren’t safe from UV rays even when you’re inside. Visible light passes right through clear glass, so it’s no surprise that ultraviolet light comes along for the ride.

If you don’t want colored film on your windows (we understand, there are times where you don’t want to have any shading) there are clear films that are just as effective in blocking out infrared (heat) and UV light.  So, your customers can enjoy the sunny day without being too hot or being exposed to harmful radiation from the sun.

5.Best of All, Tinting Helps You Save Energy, and Money

You made it this far into the article.  We’ve talked about the comfort, security, and health benefits of putting tint on your windows.  Do you need more convincing? Alright, here we go. Window film can save you serious money on your utility bills.

See, the window film does not just prevent heat and light from getting into your premises, it also keeps it from getting out as well.  Putting commercial window tint film on your windows effectively increases their power as a barrier between the inside and the outside.

In summer, your air conditioner does not have to work as hard because you don’t have as much heat constantly flooding in (in the form of infrared rays from the sun) and in the winter, you aren’t losing precious heat to the chill outside through the glass.

Commercial window tint can pay for itself in the money it saves you from spending on heating and cooling costs over the course of the first year you own it.

Types for Window Tinting for Any Taste, What’s Yours

Types for Window Tinting for Any Taste, What’s Yours

We take pride in our cars. We want them to look their best.  It gives us a sense of purpose, of status, and of class.  Next time you are on the road, take a look at the cars around you. How many of them have tinted windows?

Auto window tinting is a highly personal choice, unless the car comes with tinted windows from the dealership. The laws vary by province, but you may see someone who has dark tint on the back windows and almost nothing on the front.

There are films that offer this darkening effect, as well as films that are clear and simply block harmful ultraviolet radiation from entering the vehicle and damaging skin and interior furnishings alike. Below we cover the 4 main types of window tinting that you will see when you visit a shop for professional auto window tinting.

If, after reading this blog, you want to find out whether professional auto window tinting is something that can work for your specific car, then give us a call at 1-403-968-8468, or fill out our online contact form.  The professionals at Tint Tech know their stuff and would be happy to help you make your ride look as good as it can look.  Here are some choices for your car.

    Dyed Film

As the name implies, there is a layer of the film dyed with pigment, close to the adhesive layer which is then applied to the window of your car.

This is the cheapest option for window tinting film. Because there is a layer of dye in the material, it will not last as long as other films, and its heat blockage is lacking compared to the other types of films as well.

Because it is the most economical option, it remains popular for people who are going for the aesthetic value of having dark windows. They can appear black from the outside while still allowing visibility out from the inside.

Over time, the radiation absorbed from the sun will start to break down the dye particles, so consider how long you will be keeping your vehicle and how much you want to reinvest in the future replacing a film that is degrading.

    Metallized Film

Similar to dyed film, a metallized film will prevent heat and light transmission into the car via reflection. Microscopic metal particles in the film scatter the light from the sun before it can enter your car in the form of light and heat.

One advantage to the metallized film is that it will strengthen the window in the case of an accident and the window will be less likely to shatter in an impact.

One of the major downsides to metallized film is that due to the metal particles it blocks cell and GPS transmissions, and it can interfere with radio reception as well.  If you are someone who frequently takes calls while driving, and especially if those phone calls are critical to your business, a metallized film may not be the right choice for you.

    Carbon Film

Carbon window tinting film has particles of carbon suspended in the tinted layer which block light and heat. It is nonmetallic, so it will not interfere with your radio and cell phone the way the metallized film will.

Carbon film works well for blocking infrared radiation, and therefore will keep about 40% of the heat from the outside environment from entering the vehicle.

Unlike a dyed film, carbon film will not fade over time which will keep the windows from turning purple or gray after years of absorbing radiation from the sun. You can expect to pay more for carbon film than for dyed film, but still less than ceramic film.

    Ceramic Film

Ceramic film is the newest type of professional auto window tinting. Only on the market a few years, it has already proven its effectiveness as a material for window tinting.

Like metallized and carbon films, ceramic films have particles in the tint. Because ceramic is both nonconductive and nonreactive, it does not interfere with radio and GPS signals as the metallized film can do.

This is the most efficient window tinting film on the market. It can reduce the heat transmission into your vehicle by up to 50% while still allowing maximum visibility. Furthermore, it will block up to 99% of ultraviolet radiation.

All these benefits come with a hefty price tag, however. Ceramic film is the most expensive type of tint you can buy, but it is an investment in your vehicle that will maintain a comfortable environment and protect the inside of your car.
