    Sunlight – A Blessing and a Curse

You have to admit that driving on a sunny day or sitting at home in your favorite chair, enjoying the sunlight filling your home with light, ambiance, and warmth is a great feeling. Even if you are at the office and working, seeing the sunlight come into your workspace makes that grueling job just a little bit brighter. No question, sunlight helps our mood.

Yet, sunlight has one major drawback. Sunlight can literally ruin furniture, upholstery, carpeting, works of art, a dashboard surface, virtually any interior surface.

Why does sunlight have that negative effect on furnishings and other materials? UV rays, which are not stopped by window glass, have the effect of breaking down many of the chemicals that exist in furniture, fabric dyes, even in the color of wood treated or not. The effect is permanent discoloration of the surface.

What Can You Do to Prevent Fading from UV Rays?

When it comes to your home, there are only a few ways to protect your furnishings and carpeting.

First, you could keep items out of direct sunlight. But, logistically speaking, that can be very difficult. The rays of the sun move throughout the day, and you really can’t keep all items from sunlight entirely.

Second, you could consider window treatments, such as draperies, blinds, and shutters. That can be effective, but fix for the problem might be worse than the problem because you now have your rooms in virtual darkness.

Third, you can install window film on your home windows. Now, you might be thinking that you really do not like the idea of tinted film on your home windows. But, have no fear. Window tinting film for residential use has become very sophisticated. You can install a clear film that is virtually undetectable after installation.

It is hard not to conclude that window film, particularly clear window film is the way to go in order to protect all of your interior furnishings.

Now, with regard to your car windows, window film is a must if you want to stop your dashboard, and upholstery from fading because, unlike a home, you do not have the luxury of putting up curtains or something that would block a window for obvious reasons. Window film, therefore, becomes that much more vital to your fade-prevention goals.

Why Does Window Film Such a Great Option?

Window film is a perfect option to stop fading in its tracks because most quality window tinting film products block out up to 99 percent UV rays coming from direct sunlight. That means virtually no UV rays will reach your home’s carpet, artwork, hardwood flooring, fabrics, furniture, pianos, and other valuable items in your house.  It means UV rays will not hit the top of your dashboard, your seat upholstery, your steering wheel cover, and other surfaces of your car.

Moreover, window tinting film will also be effective in blocking 75 percent of the sun’s heat. That is a big plus as well because when you are in the warm months, you can take a little pressure off of your AC system in your home, office, or car, because a lot of the heat that would normally get through a window is reflected away with window tinting film.

Finally, window tinting film will not restrict your view. So, you are essentially able to enjoy the sunlight without having to deal with its harmful effects – win-win.

What Will Self-Tinting Windows Look Like in the Future?

Let’s face it. New tech is very, very cool.  Cell phones, tablets, renewable energy advancements, self-parking cars, self-driving cars, streaming television, wireless Bluetooth devices . . . and the list goes on.  Well, there is no shortage of new tech when it comes to the window tinting world as well.

Specifically, in the last few years, we have been seeing the evolution of “smart window” tint technology.  That is technology in which a window will change its own tint based upon the sun’s energy and will even take that energy and convert it into electricity.  It is truly amazing stuff.

So, in this article we will talk a bit about the latest developments in smart window tint tech, and speculate as to what smart window tech will mean for vehicles in the future.

At Tint Tech, we specialize in auto and residential window tint films.  But, we also keep our eye on the tech horizon. Our specialists at Tint Tech are always aware of the latest tech breakthroughs, and we are excited about the new kind of smart windows that darken in the sun and generate electricity.

The Solar Power of Tomorrow with “Perovskites”

Russian mineralogist Lev Perovski, back in 1839, discovered minerals that he aptly called perovskites.  These crystalline compounds are now instrumental in the solar power revolution.

Specifically, solar cells made from perovskites are nearly as efficient as the silicon solar panels currently in use today.  The best perovskite solar cells can convert over 22% of the sunlight’s energy into electricity, whereas silicon cells can covert around 25%.

The key, however, is that cells made from perovskites are much cheaper than their silicon counterparts.  That fact may push the solar energy world into high gear. Given the state of our environment, that might be just what we need to help the environment.

Windows that are Smart When Using the Sun’s Energy

Taking the solar harnessing power of perovskites one step further, perovskites can be the compound that leads to “smart windows.”

In general, a “smart window” is a window that can change from transparent to opaque based on the amount of sunlight and temperature interacting with it.  The warmer the window gets, the darker the window becomes to keep a home or car interior cool. Skyscraper buildings in city centers can truly benefit from such technology, and they can enjoy significant energy savings.  In the past, there were other attempts at smart window technology that did not use perovskites, where the window would transition based on temperature, but it was costly and inconsistent.

Further, “smart windows” using perovskites can also harness the power of the sun to generate electricity.  As noted, the solar cells using perovskites are almost as efficient as silicon panels. So, combining tinting technology with solar power technology, perovskites are truly the key to the smart windows of the future.

    How Do Smart Windows Function?

About one year ago, researchers developed a lead-based perovskite solar window that transitioned from transparent to opaque when the temperature hit 60 degrees Celsius.  When it is cool, the perovskite material forms a complex with another compound called methylamine. The window is clear when that complex is formed.

However, as the surrounding temperature increases, the methylamine vaporizes and separates from the perovskite, and the perovskite gets darker and absorbs sunlight.  Then, at night when it gets cooler, the methylamine vapor re-bonds with the perovskite and the window becomes clear again. The chemical reactions that result in such practical applications are fascinating.

Notably when the perovskite is absorbing sunlight as it is tinted darker, it is not as efficient as the perovskite cells discussed earlier.  The warmed perovskite tinted window can transform about 11.3% of the sunlight energy into electricity.

    Any Smart Window Disadvantages?

The technology is there, but it is not quite ready for prime time.  The solar efficiency of the solar windows drops after only a few transitions from light to dark.  That is most likely because the methylamine does not re-bond with the perovskite very well, and the bonding worsens each time.

Thus, researchers are looking for perovskite-based smart windows that do not use methylamine.  One chemist reports that cesium-based perovskite solar windows, that do not use methylamine, allow for windows that can switch from transparent to dark with no loss of performance over time.

However, the cesium-based windows have different issues.

They do not go from clear to dark unless the heat is more than 100 degrees Celsius, and their solar harnessing efficiency is only at 7%, which is far less than conventional solar cells.  Also, perovskite windows have a reddish hue to them when they are dark, and colored windows are not a favorite among builders.

    Conclusion

In sum, smart windows are here, but not quite ready.  The latest attempts, however, give a glimpse at what the future could look like – office buildings and homes that have windows that both provide shade when the sun is strong and can convert the sunlight to electricity to power the office building or home.  Imagine what life would be like without the need for electric wires coming into your home, or the need for oil to heat your home or office.

How Do You Wash a Car that Has Paint Protection Film?

We all lead very busy lives, and that can mean cutting corners on certain household chores when we must. So, ask yourself, are you tempted to use an automatic car wash because you know you just won’t have time to do it over the weekend? Do you worry that the automatic wash might do some damage to your car, particularly if you have treated your car with paint protection film?

Well, in this article we will discuss the proper way to wash your car, whether it has paint protection film installed or not. Unfortunately, as tempting as it might be, an automatic car wash is not good for a vehicle that has been treated with paint protection film. I know that comes as bad news to some – but there is a silver lining. Paint protection film is such an amazing product that cleaning your car yourself is actually a little bit easier because your car has paint protection film installed.

Of course, there is nothing better than talking to someone in person who knows all about these issues. Our Tint Tech tint pros in Calgary are the best people to talk to about what kind of paint protection film would be the way to go in your situation, and how to properly maintain it. After you read this blog, if you have some questions please give our tint pros a call at 1-403-968-8468. We are looking forward to working with you.

    Paint Protection Film Basics

If are you reading this blog, then you likely have paint protection film already on your car, or you are considering getting it installed.  If that is the case, then you know that paint protection film is a thin urethane film that adheres to the painted surfaces on your vehicle.

It cannot be seen by the naked eye once it is installed, and it is meant to protect your vehicle’s surface from all of the stuff that could scratch or scuff your car. In addition, it makes washing your favorite ride just that much easier to do.

Now let’s consider the aspects of how to properly wash your vehicle. We will first consider the basics of washing any car, with or without paint protection film.

Do’s and Don’ts When Washing any Vehicle

    1. Do It on a Regular Basis. Letting your car go too long without washing it is not a good thing.  In the salty, snowy winters it is sometimes hard to keep up, but you want to make sure that you do not wait too long because the built-up salt on your car could start to impact the clear coat paint on your car, or the longevity of the paint protection film.

    2. Don’t Wash in the Hot Sun.  We’ve all seen the commercials, musical videos, and movies with the proverbial zany car washing scene – they are always washing their cars in the hot summer sun. It makes for great entertainment, but washing your car in direct sunlight could actually result in some problems. If the sun is directly on your car, then the water you are using to wash it will evaporate quickly. That means that you could end up with water spots on your car. Worse yet, the chemicals in the soap might not react favorably to the hot sun as well.

    3. Start with the Wheels.  Given that your wheels are often the dirtiest part of your car, that would be the place to start.  Why? Because it takes care of the biggest cleaning issue on your car, and then allows the residual soap as you wash the rest of your vehicle to rinse over the wheels a second time.

    4. Try the Two-Tub Trick. You don’t want to rub dirty water on your car when you are cleaning it. That can easily happen when you constantly put the same sponge in one bucket as you wash your car. So instead, have two buckets. One with soapy water and the other with just water to rinse. After you soap up one part of the car, rinse the sponge in the rinse bucket, before getting more soap on the sponge. It really works.

Do’s and Don’ts When Washing Your Car That Has Been Treated with Paint Protection Film

There are really three major things you need to remember about washing a car with paint protection film.

    1. 7-Day Rule.  You should not wash your car within seven days of getting your car treated with paint protection film.  When paint protection film is installed, the job is not actually done when the tint shop says that you can pick up your car. The protection film on the car needs to “cure” or set on your vehicle. That can take up to a week. So, make sure that you avoid washing your car during that first week.

    2. Don’t Use a Powered Buffer. We all want our cars to be as shiny as possible. And many times, power buffers can do the trick. However, when they say “powered” buffer, they mean “powerful.”  A buffer can really dig into a car’s surface a little more than you want. Further, issues arise when there are particles or other debris that might get in the middle of the buffing process, which may end up in a scratch rather than a shine.

    3. Handle Bugs, Birds, and Tree Stuff Right Away. You don’t always need to do a full wash on your car. And it is important that any substance like bug splatter, bird droppings, or tree sap be removed as soon as possible so as not to harm your paint protection film. So, carry around a little kit to handle those spots in a jiffy. No need to go the full wash route for every bug splatter.
