Types for Window Tinting for Any Taste, What’s Yours

Tint Tech • Jan 10, 2022

We take pride in our cars. We want them to look their best.  It gives us a sense of purpose, of status, and of class.  Next time you are on the road, take a look at the cars around you. How many of them have tinted windows?

Auto window tinting is a highly personal choice, unless the car comes with tinted windows from the dealership. The laws vary by province, but you may see someone who has dark tint on the back windows and almost nothing on the front.

There are films that offer this darkening effect, as well as films that are clear and simply block harmful ultraviolet radiation from entering the vehicle and damaging skin and interior furnishings alike. Below we cover the 4 main types of window tinting that you will see when you visit a shop for professional auto window tinting.

If, after reading this blog, you want to find out whether professional auto window tinting is something that can work for your specific car, then give us a call at 1-403-968-8468 , or fill out our online contact form .  The professionals at Tint Tech know their stuff and would be happy to help you make your ride look as good as it can look.  Here are some choices for your car.

Dyed Film

As the name implies, there is a layer of the film dyed with pigment, close to the adhesive layer which is then applied to the window of your car.

This is the cheapest option for window tinting film. Because there is a layer of dye in the material, it will not last as long as other films, and its heat blockage is lacking compared to the other types of films as well.

Because it is the most economical option, it remains popular for people who are going for the aesthetic value of having dark windows. They can appear black from the outside while still allowing visibility out from the inside.

Over time, the radiation absorbed from the sun will start to break down the dye particles, so consider how long you will be keeping your vehicle and how much you want to reinvest in the future replacing a film that is degrading.

Metallized Film

Similar to dyed film, a metallized film will prevent heat and light transmission into the car via reflection. Microscopic metal particles in the film scatter the light from the sun before it can enter your car in the form of light and heat.

One advantage to the metallized film is that it will strengthen the window in the case of an accident and the window will be less likely to shatter in an impact.

One of the major downsides to metallized film is that due to the metal particles it blocks cell and GPS transmissions, and it can interfere with radio reception as well.  If you are someone who frequently takes calls while driving, and especially if those phone calls are critical to your business, a metallized film may not be the right choice for you.

Carbon Film

Carbon window tinting film has particles of carbon suspended in the tinted layer which block light and heat. It is nonmetallic, so it will not interfere with your radio and cell phone the way the metallized film will.

Carbon film works well for blocking infrared radiation, and therefore will keep about 40% of the heat from the outside environment from entering the vehicle.

Unlike a dyed film, carbon film will not fade over time which will keep the windows from turning purple or gray after years of absorbing radiation from the sun. You can expect to pay more for carbon film than for dyed film, but still less than ceramic film.

Ceramic Film

Ceramic film is the newest type of professional auto window tinting. Only on the market a few years, it has already proven its effectiveness as a material for window tinting.

Like metallized and carbon films, ceramic films have particles in the tint. Because ceramic is both nonconductive and nonreactive, it does not interfere with radio and GPS signals as the metallized film can do.

This is the most efficient window tinting film on the market. It can reduce the heat transmission into your vehicle by up to 50% while still allowing maximum visibility. Furthermore, it will block up to 99% of ultraviolet radiation.

All these benefits come with a hefty price tag, however. Ceramic film is the most expensive type of tint you can buy, but it is an investment in your vehicle that will maintain a comfortable environment and protect the inside of your car.
